Bizen ware (備前焼) is one of Japan’s oldest ceramic traditions, known for its unglazed surface and natural firing effects.
This sake cup is a handcrafted piece by Japanese ceramic artist Katsumi Yoshioka (吉岡 勝巳). Fired without glaze, the surface is shaped entirely by flame, ash, and the conditions within the kiln.
Unlike smoother forms, this piece features a faceted, sculptural body. The angular cuts and irregular silhouette create shifting shadows and a strong tactile presence in the hand.
Rich reddish tones and natural fire marks give the surface depth, making it feel more like a small sculptural object than a simple cup.
