Hida Takayama Shunkei-nuri (飛騨高山 春慶塗) is a traditional Japanese lacquerware technique known for its translucent finish that reveals the natural beauty of the wood beneath.
This piece is a vintage sweet box and tray set, finished in warm amber-toned Shunkei lacquer, showcasing the refined craftsmanship characteristic of Hida Takayama.
The gently reflective surface allows light to pass through the lacquer, subtly highlighting the wood grain and creating depth without excess decoration. The geometric grid pattern adds quiet structure, giving the piece both presence and restraint.
Originally used for serving wagashi (Japanese sweets), it can now be appreciated as a functional serving set or as a sculptural object within a space.
