Akita kabazaiku (桜皮細工) is a traditional craft from northern Japan, made by carefully layering and polishing natural cherry bark.
Unlike painted or lacquered surfaces, the beauty comes directly from the material itself. The organic grain and subtle variations are formed by nature, giving each piece a quiet depth that cannot be replicated.
This confectionery box features a rich bark exterior paired with a red lacquer interior, creating a gentle contrast when opened. Originally used for serving sweets, it also works as a small storage object or as a presence within a calm interior.
Material
Cherry bark (kabazaiku), lacquer interior
Size
Approx. 18.5 cm × 6.5 cm
This is a vintage piece in very good condition. There are no noticeable stains, though slight wear can be seen at the corners due to age.
Because natural bark is used, variations in texture and pattern are part of its character.
