Japanese Mandarin Duck Kogo
Colorful Ceramic Incense Container
A small Japanese ceramic incense container (kogo) in the form of a mandarin duck, traditionally known as oshidori in Japan.
The rounded bird is decorated with a lively arrangement of red, blue, green, brown, and warm gold-toned details. Fine painted lines describe the feathers, while the upright tail and gently turned head create a distinctive sculptural silhouette.
The lid follows a horizontal seam through the body, allowing the bird to retain its complete form when closed.
The piece is associated with Omuro Kiln (御室窯) based on the original group listing from which it was acquired. The individual maker attribution has not been independently confirmed.
In Japanese tea culture, kogo are small containers used to hold incense. Animal-shaped examples are especially appealing for their combination of practical purpose, craftsmanship, and expressive design.
The mandarin duck is also a traditional symbol of companionship and marital harmony in East Asian visual culture.
With its vivid colors and compact form, this piece can be appreciated as a small ceramic sculpture, whether displayed alone or as part of a collection of Japanese tea utensils.
