Japanese Sekimori-ishi Barrier Stone

A quiet boundary, expressed without words.

This one-of-a-kind Japanese Sekimori-ishi combines a natural stone from Niigata, Japan, with hemp cord.

The stone has a broad, low form with a richly textured surface and deep reddish-brown to dark mineral tones. Its naturally irregular surface has been preserved, allowing the character of the stone itself to remain an important part of the object.

A large wrapped loop of hemp rises above the stone, creating a strong contrast between the weight of the mineral form and the lighter, fibrous texture of the cord.

THE MEANING OF SEKIMORI-ISHI

Sekimori-ishi has long been used in Japanese gardens and tea spaces as a subtle sign meaning “Please do not enter beyond this point.”

Rather than using a fence, rope, or written notice, a single stone placed along a path quietly communicates a boundary.

It reflects a distinctly Japanese approach to space, expressing intention through a small gesture rather than an explicit instruction.

Traditionally found in tea gardens and along garden paths, today a Sekimori stone can also be appreciated as a sculptural object that brings a sense of stillness and intention into a space.

NIIGATA NATURAL STONE

The stone used for this piece is a natural stone from Niigata, Japan.

Its low rounded silhouette, irregular mineral texture, and deep earthy coloration have been retained rather than refined into a uniform form.

Depending on the light, the surface reveals subtle variations of dark brown, reddish-brown, and black, giving the stone a particularly rich visual character.

HEMP CORD

The stone is bound with hemp cord.

The natural fibrous texture of the hemp creates a quiet contrast against the dark mineral surface of the stone.

The large wrapped loop above the stone becomes an integral part of the silhouette, transforming the traditional functional form into a distinctive sculptural object.
