A quiet boundary, expressed without words.

This one-of-a-kind Japanese Sekimori-ishi combines a roughly squared natural stone with hemp cord.

Unlike the rounded stones traditionally associated with Sekimori-ishi, this piece has a strong geometric form. The angular stone retains its coarse, irregular surface, while the large loop of hemp rises vertically above it.

The contrast between the heavy rectangular stone, rough mineral texture, and carefully worked natural fiber gives the piece a particularly architectural and sculptural presence.

THE MEANING OF SEKIMORI-ISHI

Sekimori-ishi has long been used in Japanese gardens and tea spaces as a subtle sign meaning “Please do not enter beyond this point.”

Rather than using a fence, rope, or written notice, a single stone placed along a path quietly communicates a boundary.

It reflects a distinctly Japanese approach to space, expressing intention through a small gesture rather than an explicit instruction.

Traditionally found in tea gardens and along garden paths, today a Sekimori stone can also be appreciated as a sculptural object that brings a sense of stillness and intention into a space.

SQUARE NATURAL STONE

This piece uses a natural stone with a distinctive squared form.

Its rough surface, visible mineral texture, irregular edges, and substantial proportions have been left as important elements of the design.

The geometric form gives this Sekimori-ishi a very different character from versions made with smooth or rounded stones.

HEMP CORD

The stone is bound with hemp cord.

The warm, fibrous texture of the hemp creates a natural contrast against the coarse mineral surface of the stone.

A large wrapped loop rises above the stone, creating a strong vertical line and becoming an integral part of the silhouette.

HOW TO DISPLAY

Traditionally, Sekimori-ishi is placed along a garden path or at the entrance to an area where guests are gently asked not to proceed.

Today it can also be displayed in a Japanese garden, tea room, entryway, shelf, tabletop, or other interior space.

With its geometric stone and strong silhouette, this piece can also be appreciated simply as a sculptural Japanese object centered on natural material, texture, and form.

PLEASE NOTE

This piece is made using natural stone and natural fiber.

Natural cavities, rough areas, irregular edges, variations in texture, and coloration are characteristics of the materials and are not considered defects.

This is a one-of-a-kind piece. The photographs show the actual Sekimori-ishi you will receive.
