A quiet boundary, expressed without words.

This one-of-a-kind Japanese Sekimori-ishi is composed of two natural stones from Niigata, Japan, stacked vertically and bound together with hemp cord.

Unlike the traditional single-stone form, this piece uses two softly rounded stones to create a distinctive double-layered silhouette.

The large loop of hemp rising above the stones adds a strong vertical element, while the stacked stones create a quiet sense of weight and balance. The result sits somewhere between a traditional Japanese garden object and a contemporary sculptural form.

THE MEANING OF SEKIMORI-ISHI

Sekimori-ishi has long been used in Japanese gardens and tea spaces as a subtle sign meaning “Please do not enter beyond this point.”

Rather than using a fence, rope, or written notice, a single stone placed along a path quietly communicates a boundary.

It reflects a distinctly Japanese approach to space, expressing intention through a small gesture rather than an explicit instruction.

Traditionally found in tea gardens and along garden paths, today a Sekimori stone can also be appreciated as a sculptural object that brings a sense of stillness and intention into a space.

NIIGATA NATURAL STONE

The two stones used for this piece are natural stones from Niigata, Japan.

Their softly rounded forms, muted gray tones, and subtle differences in texture have been preserved, allowing the natural character of each stone to remain visible.

Stacking the two stones creates an unusual variation on the traditional Sekimori-ishi form, emphasizing balance, material, and silhouette.

HEMP CORD

The stones are bound together with natural hemp cord.

The warm, fibrous texture of the hemp contrasts with the cool gray surfaces of the stones. A large loop rises above the stacked form, becoming an important visual element of the piece itself.

HOW TO DISPLAY

Traditionally, Sekimori-ishi is placed along a garden path or at the entrance to an area where guests are gently asked not to proceed.

Today it can also be displayed in a Japanese garden, tea room, entryway, shelf, tabletop, or other interior space.

With its unusual stacked construction, this piece can also be appreciated simply as a Japanese sculptural object centered on natural material, balance, and form.

PLEASE NOTE

This piece is made using natural stone and natural fiber.

Natural cavities, irregularities, variations in texture and coloration, and subtle differences between the two stones are characteristics of the materials and are not considered defects.

This is a one-of-a-kind piece. The photographs show the actual Sekimori-ishi you will receive.
