Hokkaido Obsidian Sekimori Stone
One of a Kind
A substantial sekimori stone made from natural obsidian from Hokkaido, Japan, bound by hand with traditional Japanese Edo-uchi cord.
This particular stone has two remarkably different faces.
One side is deep charcoal-black, rugged and volcanic in appearance. Turn it around and the surface changes into a pale gray and earthy landscape crossed by a dark band. Small glassy areas catch the light with a subtle glint as the stone is viewed from different angles.
Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass formed when silica-rich volcanic lava cools rapidly. Rather than polishing away its character, this piece retains the irregular surface, coloration and natural markings of the stone.
Sekimori-ishi, or boundary stones, are traditionally placed in Japanese gardens and tea gardens as a quiet indication that a path should not be entered. A simple stone tied with cord transforms into a subtle sign of boundary, restraint and intention.
Outside the garden, it can also be appreciated simply as a sculptural natural object — on a shelf, low table, entryway or alongside ceramics and other collected objects.
The cord is Edo-uchi himo, a traditional Japanese braided cord. Its soft ivory tone creates a quiet contrast against the dark volcanic stone.
This is a particularly substantial piece, weighing approximately 702 g (1.55 lb). Its weight and broad form give it a strong physical presence despite the simplicity of the composition.
