Nachi Black Sekimori Stone — Matcha
One of a Kind
A quiet composition of deep black stone and matcha green cord.
This one-of-a-kind sekimori stone is made from Nachi black stone, a natural stone associated with Japan’s Kumano region, paired with a soft cotton cord in a muted matcha-green tone.
The stone has been polished and then given a matte finish, creating a smooth, subdued black surface rather than a high gloss. Its low, horizontal silhouette gives the piece a particularly calm and grounded presence.
Against the nearly black stone, the matcha-colored cord becomes a fine line of color — earthy rather than bright, and deliberately restrained.
Sekimori-ishi, or boundary stones, are traditionally used in Japanese gardens and tea gardens to quietly indicate that a path should not be entered. Their form is remarkably simple: a stone transformed by the addition of a tied cord.
Today, the same form can also be appreciated as a small sculptural object for the home.
Placed on a shelf, low table, entryway or alongside ceramics, the contrast between the matte black stone and muted green cord gives this piece a distinctly minimal presence.
