Nachiguro Sekimori Stone with Sisal Rope

A quiet object traditionally used to mark a boundary without the need for a written sign.

Known in Japan as a sekimori-ishi, or boundary stone, it is placed at an entrance or along a path to communicate that the way beyond is closed. Rather than creating a physical barrier, its meaning is expressed through presence, restraint, and mutual understanding.

This piece combines a smooth black Nachiguro stone with hand-knotted natural sisal fiber. The contrast between the dense, rounded stone and the loose, expressive fibers gives the object a sculptural quality, making it equally suited to a Japanese-inspired interior, tea space, meditation room, or quiet tabletop arrangement.

Each stone has its own shape, surface markings, and natural variations. No two pieces are exactly alike.

Placement and Care

This piece is intended primarily for indoor display or a dry, sheltered setting.

Sisal is a natural plant fiber and may deteriorate, discolor, or loosen when exposed to rain, strong sunlight, or prolonged humidity. It is not recommended for permanent outdoor installation.

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Do not soak or wash the rope.

Please Note

Variations in the stone’s shape, color, surface texture, and markings are natural characteristics rather than defects. The sisal fibers may also show slight irregularities and loose ends as part of their handmade, organic appearance
