Niigata Foitite Tourmaline Sekimori Stone
One of a Kind

A one-of-a-kind sekimori stone made from natural stone containing foitite tourmaline from Niigata, Japan, tied with a warm brown waxed cord.

This stone has an unusually soft, earthy palette.

Its pale cream and gray surface is crossed by natural mineral markings, with scattered dark inclusions and warm rust-colored traces creating a landscape-like pattern across the stone. No two views are quite the same.

Rather than a uniform decorative stone, its appeal lies in these naturally occurring variations — small marks, lines and changes in color that reveal the geological character of the material.

The warm brown waxed cord was chosen to complement these earthy tones without overwhelming the stone itself.

Sekimori-ishi, or boundary stones, are traditionally used in Japanese gardens and tea gardens as a quiet indication that a path should not be entered. A simple tied stone becomes a subtle expression of boundary, restraint and intention.

Outside the garden, it can also be appreciated simply as a sculptural natural object — displayed on a shelf, low table, entryway or alongside ceramics and other collected pieces.

At approximately 324 g (11.4 oz), this piece has a satisfying physical presence while remaining compact enough for an interior display.
