Known in Japan as a sekimori-ishi, this traditional object was placed along tea-garden paths or near an entrance to indicate that the way beyond was closed. Rather than functioning as a physical barrier, it communicated a gentle request through shared understanding and restraint.

This piece combines a naturally weathered stone from Niigata Prefecture with hand-tied seima, refined Japanese hemp fiber. The pale, flowing fibers contrast with the stone’s earthy reddish-grey surface, creating an object that feels both grounded and light.

Every stone is selected for its individual form and texture, then tied by hand. Its irregular surface, natural pores, color variation, and hemp fibers make this a completely unique piece.

Display it in an entryway, tea room, meditation space, on tatami, or as a sculptural object within a quiet interior.

Placement and Care

This piece is intended primarily for indoor display or a dry, sheltered location.

Seima is a natural plant fiber. Continued exposure to rain, direct sunlight, or high humidity may cause discoloration, loosening, or deterioration. It is therefore not recommended for permanent outdoor use.

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Do not soak the hemp or clean it with chemical products.
