Shigaraki Ware Carbonized Yakishime Mug — Hetchimon, Japan

A dark, quietly expressive ceramic mug made in Shigaraki, one of Japan’s historic pottery regions.

This mug is part of the Hetchimon collection by Marui Ceramics, a Shigaraki pottery maker in Shiga Prefecture, Japan.

“Hetchimon” comes from an old word used by Shigaraki craftspeople to describe something unusual, individual or slightly unconventional.

Rather than aiming for perfect uniformity, Hetchimon celebrates the small differences that emerge through clay, fire and the hands of the maker.

This mug is finished using a carbonized yakishime-style firing, creating a deep charcoal surface with subtle variations of black, smoky gray, earthy brown and muted reddish-purple tones.

The gently irregular rim, visible throwing lines and softly distorted form give each piece a distinct presence.

No two pieces will be exactly alike.

SHIGARAKI WARE

Shigaraki ware, or Shigaraki-yaki, is pottery produced around Shigaraki in Koka, Shiga Prefecture.

It is recognized as one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns and has a ceramic tradition extending back centuries.

Shigaraki ware was designated a Traditional Craft by the Japanese government in 1976.

HETCHIMON

Hetchimon is a registered collection by Marui Ceramics.

The name reflects the collection’s philosophy of embracing irregularity and individuality rather than industrial uniformity.

Subtle differences in shape, dimensions, surface texture and firing color are intentional characteristics of the pottery.
