Fujiya Tenugui – Traditional Chusen Dyeing
This tenugui is created by Fujiya, a long-established tenugui maker in Asakusa, Tokyo.
Each pattern comes from Fujiya’s original designs, developed and preserved across generations. Rather than printed, the cloth is dyed using Orizuke Chusen, a traditional Japanese hand-dyeing technique where color fully penetrates the fabric, creating:
• No “front” or “back”
• Soft, natural gradations
• A depth and atmosphere impossible to replicate by printing
The tradition is connected to the historic “Tenugui Awase” (1784), an Edo-period exhibition that celebrated artistic tenugui designs.
