Limited Shigaraki Ware Carbonized Plate — 25.5 cm
One available.
A large, expressive ceramic plate made in Shigaraki, one of Japan’s historic pottery regions.
Created as part of a collection of vessels designed with food and presentation in mind, this plate celebrates one of the defining qualities of Shigaraki pottery: the beauty of irregularity.
Its broad surface is dominated by deep charcoal and smoky black tones, while the firing creates subtle areas of blue-gray, earthy brown and muted red around the rim.
A pale, cloud-like firing mark moves across part of the interior, making the surface itself feel almost like a landscape.
The gently irregular outline and natural variation of the carbonized surface give the plate a presence that cannot be reproduced through industrial manufacturing.
It is especially striking when food is placed with restraint, allowing the dark ceramic surface to become part of the composition.
Suitable as a dinner plate, serving plate or presentation plate for both Japanese and contemporary cuisine.
This listing is for the exact piece shown in the photographs.

SHIGARAKI WARE
Shigaraki ware, or Shigaraki-yaki, is pottery produced around Shigaraki in Koka, Shiga Prefecture, Japan.
It is recognized as one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, with a ceramic tradition extending back centuries.
Shigaraki ware was designated a Traditional Craft by the Japanese government in 1976.
Its character comes from the relationship between clay, fire and the individual maker — embracing natural variation rather than perfect uniformity.
HETCHIMON
“Hetchimon” comes from a word traditionally used by Shigaraki craftspeople to describe something unusual, individual or slightly unconventional.
The Hetchimon collection by Marui Ceramics celebrates this idea through vessels whose forms, surfaces and firing patterns retain their individual character.
Rather than treating irregularity as something to remove, the collection makes it part of the object.
RED AND BLACK
This piece belongs to a series exploring red and black ceramic surfaces.
The contrast between the quiet depth of carbonized black and subtle warm tones created through firing gives the plate both restraint and intensity.
