Description
A Shigaraki-yaki plate that captures the raw power of earth and fire, crafted with the Tatara slab-building method for an organic, sculptural silhouette.
Unlike wheel-thrown pottery, Tatara work is formed by hand from pressed clay slabs, creating subtle irregularities that feel both modern and ancient. Finished with Tanka Yohen (charcoal-fired carbonization), the surface becomes a deep matte black with a stone-like texture—an understated but dramatic backdrop for sushi, seasonal vegetables, desserts, or minimalist plating.
Key Features
• Tatara slab-built craft with a naturally irregular form
• Tanka Yohen charcoal-fired finish: deep matte black, stone-like texture
• Strong wabi-sabi presence—made to be used and appreciated
Important: Natural Hairline Cracks
Some pieces may show subtle hairline cracks on the surface. These are not structural defects, but natural marks created during intense charcoal firing. They are considered part of the character of the piece—proof of the kiln’s unpredictability and the artisan’s hand.
