Description
A small Shigaraki-yaki bowl with a sculptural “Wari-Sansho” form, inspired by the natural split of a Japanese prickly ash (sansho) fruit shell.
Its intentionally cracked silhouette expresses wabi-sabi beauty—raw, imperfect, and quietly powerful. Finished with a charcoal-fired, carbonized effect (Tanka Yohen), the surface becomes a deep, smoky matte black with an earthy, non-reflective presence that makes food and objects stand out with dramatic contrast.
Key Features
• Sculptural Wari-Sansho form: intentional “cracks” that echo nature’s organic breaking patterns
• Charcoal-fired texture (Tanka Yohen): carbonized, matte finish with subtle firing variations
• Shigaraki clay tradition: handcrafted in Shigaraki, one of Japan’s historic pottery regions
Versatile Use
• Food: appetizers, otsumami, condiments, small sweets, or a single scoop of sorbet
• Display: a small sculptural object, ring/jewelry catch, or holder for a tiny air plant
Product Details
• Origin: Shigaraki, Japan
• Material: Stoneware (carbonized finish)
• Size: approx. 10.5 cm × 8 cm
Notes
Handmade and kiln-fired pieces naturally show individual differences in tone, texture, and surface character. These variations are part of the beauty of Shigaraki ware.
