[AFTER SUMMER]
AFTER SUMMER is a collection within Silent Fragments.
These stones were picked up in the last weeks of heat, when the light begins to fall lower and the season quietly starts to turn.
Nothing has been cut, polished, or reshaped.
They were found as they are, chosen one by one, given names, and placed together in a box.
[The Stones in Box I]
Five stones marked by lines, layers, fragments, and traces.
• 断簡 — Torn Script
Pale fragments crossed by fine dark lines, crowded together like pieces of an unfinished script.
• 引き潮 — Low Tide
Charcoal bands sweep across the surface in one direction, with a single pale line running through them.
• 霧 — Mist
Deep green-grey beneath an irregular bloom of pale mineral grain.
• 年輪 — Growth Rings
Rose-brown bands curve through a field of quiet grey, following the rounded edge of the stone.
• 二筋 — Two Lines
Fine dark points scatter across a pale grey surface. Two lines cross it at an angle.
Each stone is natural and one-of-a-kind. This exact arrangement will not be repeated.
[Living with Silent Fragments]
Keep the five together, or take them out one at a time.
Place the box on a shelf, a low table, or somewhere you pass every day. Open it occasionally. Hold one in your palm. Notice something you had not seen before.
They do not need to become anything else.
[The Box]
Each stone rests in its own compartment inside a paulownia (kiri) wood box.
The box is wrapped with a washi band carrying traces of old Japanese script and tied with a single cord.
The five stones belong to this box as one set and are kept together.
