A Japanese Akahada ware chaire (tea caddy) by ceramic artist Masato Oshio, complete with its original wooden tomobako storage box and Hino Kanto patterned shifuku pouch.
The rounded ceramic body is covered in a soft pale glaze with expressive brown and subtle earthy tones flowing from the shoulder. The variation created by the glaze gives the vessel a beautiful organic surface that changes around the entire form.
The accompanying Hino Kanto shifuku features a distinctive multicolored striped textile, creating a striking contrast with the quiet ceramic surface.
Traditionally, a chaire is used to hold koicha (thick matcha) during the Japanese tea ceremony. With its sculptural form, glaze, textile pouch, and original wooden box, this piece can also be appreciated as a complete Japanese craft object.
