A vintage Japanese kogo crafted in traditional Hakone Yosegi Zaiku marquetry.

The small hexagonal form is covered with an intricate geometric pattern created from contrasting natural woods. Viewed from above, the repeating pattern creates an almost textile-like graphic composition, while the sides reveal the layered precision characteristic of Hakone marquetry.

Yosegi Zaiku is a traditional woodworking technique associated with the Hakone and Odawara region of Japan, using the natural colors and grains of different woods to construct complex geometric patterns.

Originally made as a kogo — a small lidded container used for incense in the Japanese tea ceremony — this piece also works beautifully as a small decorative box, sculptural object, or collectible example of Japanese geometric design.
