A vintage Japanese chaire by Ichino Shinsui, accompanied by its traditional shifuku textile pouch.
The chaire has a tall, slender form with a richly varied brown to dark brown surface. Subtle changes in tone and texture give the ceramic body a quiet, expressive character, while the patterned shifuku adds a contrasting textile element.
A maker’s mark is present on the base.
Traditionally, chaire are ceramic tea caddies used to hold koicha (thick matcha) in the Japanese tea ceremony. Beyond its original function, the combination of ceramic vessel and textile pouch also makes this a beautiful small object for display.
