This is a vintage Japanese bamboo hanakago, a traditional flower basket used for ikebana arrangements and tea ceremony settings.
The basket features a distinctive sculptural silhouette, with a cylindrical lower body, an open lattice center, and a wide flared upper section. Different weaving techniques are combined throughout the piece, creating beautiful changes in texture and transparency.
A tall, slender bamboo handle extends above the basket, giving the piece an elegant vertical presence. The upper section flares outward to approximately 20 cm / 7.9 in at its widest point, creating a particularly expressive and architectural form.
