This is a small vintage Japanese bamboo hanakago, a traditional flower basket used for ikebana arrangements and tea ceremony settings.
Despite its compact size, the basket has a remarkably expressive construction. The body combines tightly woven bamboo with an open lattice upper section, while the handle is wrapped and accented with darker natural vine-like material, giving the piece a rustic and highly distinctive character.
An inner liner is included, allowing small seasonal flowers, grasses, or delicate branches to be arranged inside.
At only approximately 10 cm / 3.9 in tall excluding the handle, this is a particularly charming small-scale hanakago. It works beautifully on a shelf, table, cabinet, or within a small tea ceremony or ikebana display.
