Japanese Blue and White Kogo
Daimaru Hokuho — Arima Raitei Brushwork
A Japanese blue-and-white ceramic incense container (kogo), attributed to Daimaru Hokuho (大丸北峰), with a design associated with the brushwork of Zen monk Arima Raitei (有馬頼底).
The small square body is decorated with expressive cobalt-blue brushwork on a white ceramic ground. Bamboo-like foliage extends across the sides, while the lid is topped with a small sculptural finial.
The combination of the geometric container, hand-painted decoration, and upright finial gives the piece a distinctive architectural silhouette.
In the Japanese tea ceremony, kogo are traditionally used to hold incense. Their small scale often allows for highly individual forms, decorative techniques, and artistic collaborations.
This piece can also be appreciated as a miniature ceramic art object, displayed independently or alongside other Japanese tea utensils and collected objects.
