Quantity

A distinctive vintage Japanese suiteki (water dropper) crafted from brass.

Traditionally used as a calligraphy utensil, a suiteki holds a small amount of water that is added to an inkstone when preparing sumi ink.

This example is particularly striking for its unusual sculptural form.

A low, flattened body extends into a long, sharply rising spout, creating an elegant horizontal silhouette. The dark aged surface of the brass gives the piece a restrained, almost architectural presence.

Although originally created as a functional Japanese calligraphy tool, today it can also be appreciated simply as a sculptural metal object.

SUITEKI — JAPANESE WATER DROPPER

Suiteki are small vessels traditionally used in Japanese calligraphy to control the amount of water added to an inkstone.

Because only a small amount of water is required when grinding an ink stick, the vessel and its spout are designed to allow water to be introduced with greater control.

Over time, suiteki developed into highly varied forms and became objects of craftsmanship in their own right.

SCULPTURAL FORM

This piece has an especially unusual low-profile construction.

The broad, flattened body is balanced by a long projecting spout that rises gently before terminating in an angular tip.

The lid and small central knob maintain the restrained geometry of the vessel.

Viewed from the side, the entire piece forms a strong horizontal line, giving it the appearance of a small modernist metal sculpture.

AGED BRASS

The piece is made of brass and has developed a deep, dark surface through age.

Subtle variations in tone, patina, and surface texture give the metal additional depth and reflect the history of the object.

The aged surface has been retained rather than polished to a bright modern finish.

USE & DISPLAY

Traditionally, this piece can be used alongside a suzuri inkstone, sumi ink stick, brushes, and other Japanese calligraphy utensils.

It can also be displayed independently as a vintage Japanese metalwork object on a desk, shelf, console, or alongside a collection of ceramics and other objects.

CONDITION

Very good vintage condition considering its age.

This is an older piece and shows some minor surface rubbing, wear, and natural changes to the brass consistent with age.

Overall, however, it has been very well preserved and remains in beautiful condition.

The darkened surface, subtle tonal variations, and patina are characteristic of aged brass and form part of the character of the object.

Please refer carefully to the photographs for the exact condition.
