Vintage Japanese Carved Kogo Incense Container

A vintage Japanese kogo, a small container traditionally used to hold incense during the Japanese tea ceremony.

Unlike ceramic kogo, this piece has a lightweight, carved construction with a deeply textured surface. An intricate scrolling pattern covers the entire lid, revealing rich reddish tones against a very dark brown-black ground.

Its low, disc-like silhouette and dense relief pattern give the piece a particularly graphic and sculptural presence. It can be appreciated not only as a traditional tea utensil, but also as a small Japanese decorative object.

The piece comes with its original wooden storage box. The box bears the inscription “Kazan” (華山).
