A vintage Japanese ceramic kogo, a small lidded container traditionally used for incense in the Japanese tea ceremony.
This piece has a compact square form with a rich olive-brown glazed surface and a distinctive raised sculptural detail on the lid. The restrained form and earthy glaze give it a strong presence despite its small scale.
Beyond its traditional use as a kogo, it can also be appreciated as a small ceramic object or decorative container in a contemporary interior.
The piece comes with its wooden storage box with handwritten Japanese calligraphy. A maker's mark is also present, although the mark has not been identified.

The piece is exceptionally clean and well preserved, with no noticeable chips or cracks.
