A vintage Japanese chaire, or tea caddy, traditionally used to hold koicha (thick matcha) in the Japanese tea ceremony.
This piece has a compact rounded form with a distinctive striped glaze in warm reddish-brown and deep brown-black tones. The horizontal bands create a strong graphic rhythm across the surface, giving the vessel a particularly expressive presence.
It is accompanied by a decorative shifuku, the traditional textile pouch used to protect and present a chaire. The blue-toned patterned textile contrasts beautifully with the earthy ceramic body.
A maker’s mark is present on the base, although the signature has not been identified.
Traditionally used as a formal tea utensil, the piece can also be appreciated as a small ceramic and textile object outside of the tea setting.
