Vintage Japanese Chaire Tea Caddy with Silk Shifuku

Japanese Chaire Tea Caddy with Plaid Silk Shifuku

A traditional Japanese ceramic chaire accompanied by a beautifully patterned silk shifuku, presented together as a tea ceremony set.

The tea caddy has a compact, gently rounded silhouette with a glossy, deep brown-black glaze. Subtle variations of color appear across the surface, while the unglazed lower section and light-colored lid provide a quiet contrast.

Its accompanying silk shifuku features a soft salmon-pink ground with a woven-looking cream plaid pattern. The vertical and horizontal lines create a restrained geometric composition, complemented by a deep purple braided drawstring.

The contrast between the smooth ceramic vessel and the structured textile pattern gives this set a balanced, understated character.

In Japanese tea culture, a chaire is traditionally used to hold powdered tea, particularly for the preparation of koicha (thick tea). The shifuku protects the vessel while adding another layer of craftsmanship and aesthetic expression.

Beyond its traditional purpose, the pair can be appreciated as a small collection of Japanese ceramic and textile objects.
