A vintage Japanese ceramic kogo, or incense container, sculpted in the form of a plump chicken.
The piece has a wonderfully simple and playful silhouette, with a rounded white body contrasted by a vivid red comb and wattle. Small hand-finished details give the chicken a charming expression while the restrained decoration keeps the overall form clean and sculptural.
The lid separates horizontally through the body, allowing the piece to appear as a continuous small ceramic sculpture when closed.
An artist’s mark is present on the underside, although the signature has not been identified.
Traditionally, kogo are small lidded containers used to hold incense during the Japanese tea ceremony. Its distinctive form also makes it an appealing small sculpture or decorative object outside of its original context.
