A vintage Japanese ceramic kogo, or incense container, sculpted in the form of a resting duck holding a small cherry blossom in its beak.

The softly rounded body is modeled with individually carved feather details and a warm, earthy glaze. A small pink sakura blossom held in the duck’s beak adds an especially poetic detail to the piece.

The lower section is finished in a contrasting deep green glaze, creating a subtle division between the lid and base while preserving the sculptural form when closed.

The piece bears the mark of Hokyu (芳丘).

Traditionally, kogo are small lidded containers used to hold incense during the Japanese tea ceremony. Its expressive form also allows it to be displayed independently as a small Japanese ceramic sculpture or collectible object.
