A vintage Japanese kogo, or incense container, created in the sculptural form of a horse, one of the twelve animals of the Japanese zodiac.

The piece depicts a seated horse with an upright, expressive silhouette. Its modeled mane, saddle-like details, and layered green and earthy-toned glaze give the small ceramic form considerable depth and character.

Rather than appearing simply as a container, the closed form reads almost entirely as a miniature ceramic sculpture.

The piece bears a mark reading “Shuseki” (朱石). Further details regarding the maker have not been conclusively identified.

Traditionally, kogo are small lidded containers used to hold incense during the Japanese tea ceremony. Outside of its original function, this piece can also be displayed as a collectible Japanese ceramic object or small animal sculpture.

The horse (uma) is one of the twelve animals of the Japanese zodiac and has long been associated with vitality, movement, and strength.
