A vintage Japanese Iga ware kogo, or incense container, created in the form of the zodiac dragon.
The piece has an organic, asymmetrical form with a sculpted dragon emerging across the lid. Its earthy clay body, irregular surface, and dark natural glaze create a powerful sculptural presence characteristic of traditional Japanese ceramics.
The original storage box is inscribed “Iga-yaki” (伊賀焼), “Tatsu” (辰 / Dragon), and “Kogo” (香合 / incense container), and bears an artist’s signature and seal. The artist has not been conclusively identified.
Traditionally used to hold incense during the Japanese tea ceremony, this piece also stands beautifully on its own as a small sculptural ceramic object.
The dragon is one of the twelve animals of the Japanese zodiac and has long been associated with strength, vitality, and good fortune.
