A large vintage Japanese ceramic vessel designed for ikebana flower arrangements, dating from the Showa era.
Its long, low form has an expressive, deeply textured surface reminiscent of weathered stone, bark, or a natural landscape. Multiple openings along the top allow flowers and branches to be arranged across the length of the vessel, making it particularly suited to sculptural and asymmetrical ikebana compositions.
At 38.5 cm (15.2 in) wide, this is a substantial piece with a strong architectural presence. Even without flowers, its unusual form works beautifully as a sculptural ceramic object.
The neutral grey-beige glaze and irregular hand-worked surface give the piece an understated, organic character that works particularly well in minimal, wabi-sabi, brutalist, and contemporary interiors.
A maker's mark is present on the base, although we have not been able to identify or confidently read the signature.
