A vintage Japanese katatsuki chaire, a traditional ceramic tea caddy used for storing koicha (thick matcha) in the Japanese tea ceremony.

This piece has the classic katatsuki, or “shouldered,” silhouette, finished in a deep glossy black glaze with subtle variations across the surface.

It is accompanied by a decorative shifuku, the traditional textile pouch made specifically to protect and present a chaire. The richly patterned textile and braided cord create a beautiful contrast with the restrained dark ceramic body.

While traditionally made as a formal tea utensil, the chaire and its shifuku can also be appreciated as a small ceramic and textile object outside of the tea setting.
