A vintage Japanese lidded wooden box made in the tradition of Akita magewappa bentwood craft.
With its precise square form, finely grained wooden surfaces, and restrained construction, this piece has a remarkably clean and architectural presence.
Unlike the round and oval forms commonly associated with magewappa, this piece is formed as a large square box measuring approximately 20 × 20 cm.
The simple geometric lid is finished with a small square wooden handle at its center, creating an almost minimalist composition.
AKITA MAGEWAPPA
Magewappa is a traditional Japanese bentwood craft in which thin sheets of wood are carefully shaped and joined to create lightweight yet refined vessels and containers.
This vintage piece is associated with the traditional craft of Akita Prefecture.
Its construction highlights the natural grain of the wood rather than relying on elaborate decoration, allowing the material and precise geometry of the box to define its character.
SQUARE FORM
The unusual square construction gives this piece a particularly contemporary appearance.
Fine parallel grain runs across the lid, while the clean edges and shallow rectangular body create a strong architectural silhouette.
A small square wooden handle is positioned at the center of the lid.
The restrained geometry makes the piece equally appealing as a traditional Japanese craft object or as a functional storage piece in a contemporary interior.
USE & DISPLAY
The box can be used for storing small objects, textiles, tea utensils, accessories, stationery, or other collected pieces.
It can also simply be displayed as a Japanese wooden object, particularly in interiors centered around natural materials, minimalism, wabi-sabi, or Japandi aesthetics.
