A vintage Japanese ceramic kogo, or incense container, sculpted in the form of a seated monkey.

The monkey is modeled with a wonderfully compact, almost human-like posture, sitting upright with its arms folded across its body. The warm brown glaze emphasizes the rounded sculptural form and the expressive details of the face.

The lid separates around the middle of the figure, allowing the piece to retain the appearance of a continuous small sculpture when closed.

An artist’s mark is present on the piece, although the signature has not been identified.

Traditionally, kogo are small lidded containers used to hold incense during the Japanese tea ceremony. Beyond its original function, this piece works beautifully as a small ceramic sculpture, collectible object, or display piece.
