A vintage Japanese ceramic kogo, or incense container, formed as the face of Otafuku, also known as Okame.
The rounded white ceramic form features the characteristic gentle expression of Otafuku, with softly modeled cheeks, narrow smiling eyes, and a small red mouth. Minimal decoration allows the sculptural quality of the face to stand out.
Otafuku is a traditional Japanese figure associated with happiness, good fortune, and a joyful domestic life. Her distinctive face has appeared for centuries in masks, folk objects, theater, and decorative arts throughout Japan.
Originally created as a kogo — a small lidded container used to hold incense during the Japanese tea ceremony — this piece also has a strong presence simply as a small Japanese ceramic object or folk sculpture.
