A vintage Japanese kogo, or incense container, created in the sculptural form of a rooster, representing the Rooster of the twelve Japanese zodiac animals.
The ceramic body is decorated in traditional sometsuke style, with rich cobalt-blue painting over a clean white ground. Detailed feathers, an expressive crest, and the upright silhouette give the piece a lively sculptural presence.
The division between the lid and base is subtly incorporated into the body of the rooster, allowing the closed piece to read almost entirely as a small ceramic sculpture.
The original storage box is labeled “Eto Kogo” (干支香合), meaning “Zodiac Incense Container.”
Traditionally, kogo are small lidded containers used to hold incense during the Japanese tea ceremony. Beyond its original function, this piece can also be appreciated as a collectible Japanese ceramic object or small animal sculpture.
