A vintage Japanese Utsumi-style chaire, accompanied by a pure silk shifuku made in the traditional Oribe Donsu pattern.

Unlike the taller forms of many chaire, the Utsumi form is distinguished by its broad, low silhouette. This piece has a beautifully rounded body finished in a deep dark brown glaze, with a contrasting flow of muted green-gray glaze descending from the shoulder.

The accompanying shifuku is made of silk in a vivid pink Oribe Donsu pattern. Oribe Donsu is a traditional textile pattern historically associated with the tea culture surrounding Furuta Oribe, one of the most influential tea masters of the Momoyama period.

The contrast between the dark, restrained ceramic body and the bright patterned textile gives the set a particularly strong visual presence.

Traditionally used to hold koicha (thick matcha) during the Japanese tea ceremony, it can also be appreciated as a sculptural Japanese ceramic and textile object.
