Vintage Japanese Yukinko Kokeshi Doll

A beautifully sculptural vintage Japanese “Yukinko” (雪ん子) kokeshi, depicting a child dressed for the snowy winter.

Standing approximately 16.5 cm / 6.50 in tall, the figure has an unusually architectural silhouette, with a large pointed hood surrounding the small painted face and a deeply textured wooden body below.

YUKINKO — SNOW CHILD

“Yukinko” literally means “snow child.”

The theme appears in Japanese creative kokeshi in various interpretations, often depicting children wrapped in protective winter clothing associated with Japan’s snowy regions.

This example is particularly striking for its restrained construction.

The face is framed deep within a large pointed wooden hood, while the long body is covered with fine vertical carved lines that suggest the texture and weight of winter clothing.

DESIGN

Rather than relying on colorful painted decoration, much of the visual character comes directly from the wood itself.
