Jinnai Sakata — Black Mashiko Ceramic Bowl

A sculptural black ceramic bowl by Japanese pottery artist Jinnai Sakata (坂田甚内), from Mashiko, Japan.

The vessel features a compact, rounded body, a substantial rolled rim, and a small foot that lifts its weighty silhouette gently above the surface.

Its charcoal-black clay surface is richly textured, with subtle horizontal ridges, natural speckling, and irregularities that reveal the character of the material.

A small outward extension interrupts the otherwise circular rim, adding an understated asymmetry to the form.

Part of the same stylistic series as a wider katakuchi bowl, this variation has a deeper, more enclosed profile. Its restrained proportions make it equally compelling as a ceramic vessel or a standalone sculptural object.

The bowl pairs naturally with stone, wood, and other organic materials, bringing a quiet architectural presence to a contemporary interior.
