Jinnai Sakata — Black Ceramic Plate with Gold Crab Motif
A striking Japanese ceramic art plate by Jinnai Sakata (坂田甚内), featuring an intricate textured border and a gold-toned central composition depicting a crab.
Made in the Mashiko pottery tradition, this substantial plate brings together dark earthen tones, delicate linear patterns, and expressive gold decoration.
The wide black border is covered in closely repeated, flowing motifs that create a rhythmic, almost topographical surface.
At the center, a softly weathered gold-toned field reveals a finely drawn crab, its delicate lines contrasting with the richly textured surrounding surface.
Measuring approximately 32 cm in diameter, the piece has a strong architectural presence.
Displayed upright on a plate stand, it becomes a sculptural wall-side or shelf object. Laid flat on a low table or console, it can also serve as a decorative centerpiece.
An expressive work of Japanese ceramic art, balancing ornament, texture, and restraint.
